The Highland Community College volleyball team secured their first win of the season with a (25-15), (23-25), (25-21), (25-17) victory over the Elgin Spartans on Tuesday, August 25th.

It is no secret that the Lady Cougars are a young team—nine of the eleven members are freshmen. That being said, head coach Beth Groshans hoped Tuesday’s win helped the team (coming off a difficult tournament in the Dells) from a mental standpoint.

“We’re very young and inexperienced,” Groshans said after the contest. “They should be a little more confident [after the win].”

Freshmen Nicole Carlson, Ari Linden, and Sam Mains all played significant points for Highland, who won the third and fourth sets to clinch the win after narrowly losing the intense second set by just two points.

In a match where nearly every set was close in score, it was important for the Lady Cougars to limit their mistakes. Highland’s serves were consistent, and they made the Spartans work to earn the vast majority of their points.

“I thought we served aggressively, and on offense, we had some sparks of being the offensive team we can be,” said Groshans.

Highland opened conference play on September 1st, and coach Groshans noted the importance of winning before competing against the challenging teams in the Arrowhead conference. The Cougars had another opportunity to polish their game before the bulk of their schedule began with a match against the College of Lake County on August 27th, and did so with a 18-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-13, 18-16 victory.

Students were encouraged to wear superhero apparel, and those who participated were invited to a pizza party with the team after the game.

Highland’s first conference game was on September 1st against Kishwaukee in Malta, Illinois. The team is scheduled to play at home on September 9, 16, and 29.
